REVIEW: Studio 60, 1x12, "Monday"

This episode is all over the place. The strength of Sorkin's writing (and by this episode, I mean dialogue) makes the component parts interesting, but it doesn't work together as a cohesive whole.

It looks like various pieces are being moved around to set up the next two episodes, which is a two-parter. But even that isn't excuse enough for this scatter-shot approach to drama.

The Harriet/Matt thing continues to be one-note, until she tells him to find a gear and stick with it. But at least it's not the painful-to-watch Danny pursuing Jordan. Last episode I was pulling for them. This episode I want him to leave her the hell alone. Not sure what Sorkin is going for there... Danny continues to be the most boring character in the ensemble - and now he's being annoying as well.

It amazes me that the two strongest scenes involved Steven Weber's character - not that he hasn't had moments to shine before, but usually he's overshadowed by other things. This time around he's actually the highlight of an otherwise average episode. I think he stole every scene he was in - even on the phone to Jordan while he ate a sandwhich he was on fire. Making a corporate takeover of a casino in Macau interesting is quite a feat, though the real strength was in the negotiation with his bosses over how to tell the FCC to go jump.

Two other noteworthy scenes: Tom asks Lucy out on a date - the only couple on the show I'm shipping right now; Darius and Simon's showdown over the issue of race. I'm totally siding on Darius on this one. It could be bad writing (!), but wasn't Simon the one who wanted to hire Darius because he wasn't doing "black comedy" in the club? And now he's all in his face about not wanting to be "the black guy"?

Hehehehehe... well, people justifiably complained about John Wells' craptacular WW titles like "Duck and Cover" and "Access"... but "Monday" is worse than all of them put together!

The problem is that the only thing in common with all the tiny stories in this episode is that they all take place on Monday... boring!

Watching BSG tonight, if you were wondering :-)

P.S. He could have at least called it "Monday, Monday," so there'd at least be a song reference in the title.
